As much as we all love JEEERKS jerky, the company wouldn’t exist without the exhuberant Pip Clark, whose drive, determination and motivation, has seen the business thrive under her direction since its inception. Find out a little more about Pip, JEEERKS and what makes her tick.
Tell us a little bit about how and where it all began?
I have always loved jerky, ever since I was a kid actually, and what was initially set out to be kind of hobby business has turned into a legitimate company which established in 2014 and since then, I’ve been working hard to make it a renowned, household favourite in Australia.
Why Jerky? What is it about jerky that makes you tick?
Jerky is such a versatile product and I have always been passionate about educating people about the nutritional benefits of the product. People often think jerky is bad for you when it isn’t, jerky is a low fat, low carbohydrate, wholesome snack alternative to chips and lollies. If you choose the right jerky, not highly processed and full of preservatives, you are sure to get hooked and it will become a wholesome part of your every day diet.
Do you think it is difficult for women to run a small business in Australia, given it is a generally male dominated area?
Nothing is ever too difficult. If you have motivation and resilience, you can do anything you want regardless of your gender. I guess the main thing is to set realistic goals for yourself and your business and keep plugging away at your dream, regardless of the challenges that might crop up along the way, you are sure to succeed. Consistency is the key to success I say!
What are three of the biggest challenges you have faced on the JEEERKS journey?
The first was learning about the legalities and guidelines of launching a food product. The second, finding a point of difference and standing out from the other jerky products and finally, staying positive and optimistic in the hard times has been at times, very challenging but in the end the positives always outweigh the negatives.
What does 2019 hold for JEEERKS?
The main and very exciting goal for 2019 is launching the new Vegemite product range, which is due to be released early January 2019. It is going to be big, so watch this space! I’m also hoping to continue to with the expansion of the JEEERKS product line and widen my distribution across the Australian and possibly International market.
Any parting words of wisdom in regards to running a successful business you would like to share?
Don’t be afraid of failure, if you put your mind to it you can do anything. Be a DOER not a GONNA and most importantly of all, have fun pursuing your dream and believe they can actually come true.
